Our Latest Picture...

Some fellow adoptive parents made a trip to Liberia to help finish the orphanage project. We opened their pictures the other day and this is what we found...please look on ONLY if you can see it with laughter, ONLY if you could look past the tears and see their personalities. From a mom who has met her kids, and knows their personalities....this made me laugh out loud....

Karen---I took this picture (Monday 7/27) and it makes me laugh, too!! I'm so glad you see it the same way! Early in the week, Ruthie cried EVERY time Brant or I would even look her way, so we learned to take it slow and gave her some time to warm up and get to know us a little. The photo is so funny to me because Elijah is so good natured and happy---but he was PANICKED as soon as he realized the nanny was going to hand Ruthie to him for the picture. His smile EVAPORATED and he got this look like...."You're kidding me---you're not going to hand HER to ME, are you????" I was grinning when I hit the shutter. Love it!!!

You aksed on my blog about packing...I bought warm up suits for all my kiddos for the plane becaue it can be SO cold and obviously SE Asain kiddos and African kiddos are not used to that. For our Daniel, who's a pretty immobile baby, I didn't think I'd need (he'd need) that much warmth coz I'll be holding him, but I wanted a good hoodie, and some soft sweat pants and socks. I made a blanket for each of my kiddos for their trip home too. Easy on and easy off layers are so good for kids on planes coz if they squigggle a lot, they are going to get warm, but when they settle down, they get chilled...jacket on, jacket off, jacket on again.....and if you've got zippers, its just less complicated. Cardboard books for littler chidlren are good , I LOVE having a MAGNA-DOODLE for any aged children for travel. They can draw but not drop crayons or pencils all over the place.Noah was 5 and so was Rachel when they came home; we played the connect the dots and make boxes game a lot because we had a huge language barrier that the connecting the dots bridged right over. Tic tac toe works well too, we played War and a couple of other card games too in the plane. Memory game has too many cards for a tray table. If you have an Ipod with lots of songs on it that you know the children sang in Liberia (they know a lot of the songs we sing in the US) you can share the ear buds and sing along together. Toddler babies are harder to amuse but peek a boo at least takes no carry on luggage space!!!! one of those dolls or stuffed animlals that has the ties, velcors, snaps, buttons, big hooks to fasten and unfasten are fun for babies...and not hard to make with an already existing stuffed animal or jacket for a doll. That kind of stuff keeps a toddler occupied for a long time. I loved the DRESSY BESSY or DAPPER DAN that my older kids had ages ago. There is nothing that I've seen in stores in more recent times that compare.
Can't wait till all our children are REALLY on their planes home!!!
